Pre-press Guidelines for HPIndigo Provide a complete and final set of laser proofs that have been marked for color breaks. Create individual pages to print as Reader’s Spreads. Impositioning will be done at the GSB print center. The HP 5000 reproduces colors as process colors. For proper representation of colors, we recommend that you work in CMYK in all applications. To achieve a richer fuller black, make up a 4/C black to the following percentages: 70C, 70M, 70Y, 100K. The preferred size for rules is .5 point for best quality. Delete any style sheets not being used in the document. Delete the predefined base colors of Red, Green, and Blue from the default color palette of master grids. Also delete any colors that you defined, but did not use in the document. Remember to include all fonts (printer and screen) used in document and graphic files. Graphic file fonts should be converted to outlines to avoid the need for missing fonts. Avoid creating type in PhotoShop. PhotoShop rasterizes type with poor quality. It’s best to import images into your layout program, then add text there. For jobs that require folding, avoid heavy saturation along folds, the toner will crack in these areas. Provide a folding dummy for all jobs, especially those which require special folding instructions. Avoid Quark XPress custom typefaces (i.e. bold, italic, shadow, etc.) Avoid using large, solid coverage of color. Although we can control some of the banding and streaking, we recommend using textures to help disguise some of the inconsistencies. Delete unwanted elements. Do not cover up unwanted elements with a white box. The RIP will still process that image. Do not create blends in Quark XPress. It will result in severe banding. Created blends in either PhotoShop or Illustrator.
