Scanning Guidelines

Convert all images to CMYK and save as EPS or TIFF files.

Scan image resolution must be between 255 and 340 for optimal print quality.

Image manipulation (i.e. scaling, rotating, and cropping) should be done in the image editing program. Performing these tasks in the layout program compromises image quality and increases the processing time. In addition, you are asking the RIP to process the image twice.

Maximum ink coverage should be 260% - 280% per page.

Clipping paths should have a flatness of 2.

Gradients created in PhotoShop or Illustrator produce the best results.

Do not save files containing alpha channels. The scan resolution after scaling should be at least one and a half times as high as the screen ruling that is going to be used to print the image. For example, when printing with a 150 lines per inch (lpi) screen, the image should be scanned at least 255 dpi. FPOs should be clearly marked “FPO” on the hard copy laser proof provided with the electronic file. They must include enough detail to determine scaling percentages and positioning. Try to maintain at least 72 dpi resolution. Type FPO in large letters and group it to the image in the electronic document.

Vendor Images: Upon receiving an image from your vendor, do not rename the file. The file name is the line back to the high resolution file. Renaming the file will force the operator to re-establish the link, resulting in added time and additional charges.

Images placed in picture boxes should be filled with white or black with 0%. Filling the picture box with NONE will result in stair-stepped edges and a degradation of quality.
